Article Overview
The total optical cable length is calculated by summing measured route segments and adding allowances for slack, bends, splices, terminations, and installation-specific factors.
Step 1: Measure the Route
Start by measuring the physical path of the cable from origin to destination. Break the route into segments such as conduit runs, tray sections, risers, vertical drops, and underground ducts. Multiply each segment by its quantity if repeated, then sum all segments to get the base length .
Step 2: Add Slack and Termination Allowances
Include slack for terminations, splices, and service loops. Typically, 1–3 meters per end is stored to protect connectors and allow re-termination during commissioning. Splice closures may require additional slack to allow re-entry without stressing fibers .
Step 3: Account for Bends and Routing Adjustments
Add extra length for bends and turns. A common practice is 0.3–0.5 meters per 90-degree bend, depending on the cable type and bend radius. Include allowances for vertical runs, cabinet entry paths, and firestopping pathways .
Step 4: Include Installation Factors
Adjust for installation-specific conditions:
- Conduit runs: extra length for friction and pulling constraints.
- Underground installations: extra for settling and future access.
- Aerial installations: extra for sag and weather movement .
Step 5: Consider Excess Fiber Length Due to Stranding
For stranded loose tube cables, the fiber inside the tube is slightly longer than the cable core due to helical stranding. Calculate the excess fiber length using the stranding radius (R) and lay length (pitch) with the Pythagorean formula to ensure proper fiber performance and avoid stress .
Step 6: Apply a Waste Factor
Include a buffer (typically 10–20%) to cover unexpected adjustments, future expansions, or minor measurement errors .
Step 7: Calculate Total Cable Length
Sum the base length, slack, bend allowances, installation factors, and waste factor to determine the total optical cable length required. This ensures accurate procurement and reduces the risk of shortages or excess material . By following these steps, you can plan optical cable installations efficiently, account for all practical considerations, and ensure reliable network performance.
