Article Overview
Fiber optic fusion joints are protected using fusion protection sleeves and splice closures, which shield the spliced fibers from environmental and mechanical damage.
Fusion Protection Sleeves
A fiber optic fusion protection sleeve is a cylindrical device designed to protect the delicate splice point where two fibers are fused together. These sleeves are typically made from hard plastic, aluminum alloy, or stainless steel and consist of three main components: a hot melt adhesive liner, a strength member, and the outer heat-shrinkable tube. The adhesive provides vibration damping and environmental sealing, the strength member reinforces the inner tube, and the heat-shrinkable sleeve secures the splice by shrinking tightly around the fiber, preventing bending or breakage and protecting against moisture, dust, and physical stress . Fusion sleeves are available for single-mode, multi-mode, and ribbon fibers, and they come in various lengths and diameters to accommodate different fiber types and splice configurations . Installation involves placing the sleeve over the fiber before splicing, performing the fusion, and then applying heat to shrink the sleeve and activate the adhesive.
Fiber Optic Splice Closures
For additional protection, fiber optic splice closures (also called joint closures) are used to house multiple fusion splices in a secure enclosure. These closures provide mechanical protection, environmental sealing, and fiber management. They are typically made from high-strength plastic or anti-corrosive polypropylene and include components such as a box body, sealing rings, lock buckles, and internal trays for organizing excess fiber and fusion sleeves . Closures are designed for different deployment environments:
- Buried type: IP68-rated for underground or duct installations.
- Overhead type: Mounted on poles or walls, typically IP55 or higher.
- Handhole type: Accessible at manholes or pipeline entrances.
- Distribution boxes: For outdoor fiber distribution with high capacity . Modern closures may use gel-sealing or heat-shrink sealing to provide self-healing, water-tight protection, and allow easy re-entry for maintenance without specialized tools . They are compatible with all standard fiber types, including G652D and G657 series.
Summary
To protect a fiber optic fusion joint effectively:
- Use a fusion protection sleeve to secure the individual splice and prevent mechanical or environmental damage.
- Install the splice within a fiber optic splice closure for additional protection, fiber management, and long-term reliability.
- Select the appropriate closure type based on installation environment (buried, aerial, handhole, or distribution). These protective solutions ensure stable signal transmission, durability, and resistance to moisture, dust, and physical stress, which are critical for both outdoor and indoor fiber optic networks .
