Article Overview
A typical three-wire fiber optic sensor uses one wire for power, one for ground, and one for signal output.
Overview of Three-Wire Configuration
In many fiber optic sensors, especially photoelectric fiber sensors with a separate amplifier unit, the three wires serve the following purposes:
- Power Supply (V+): This wire provides the necessary voltage to operate the sensor's internal electronics, usually DC voltage such as 12–24V. It powers the light source in the fiber amplifier unit and any signal processing circuitry.
- Ground (GND or 0V): This wire completes the electrical circuit and serves as a reference point for the sensor's operation. It ensures stable operation and reduces electrical noise interference.
- Signal Output (OUT): This wire carries the sensor's output signal to a controller, PLC, or other monitoring device. The output can be NPN (sinking) or PNP (sourcing) depending on the sensor type. When the fiber detects an object or a change in light intensity, the output wire switches between high and low states, transmitting the detection information.
How It Works
The fiber optic sensor system consists of a fiber unit and a fiber amplifier unit. The fiber unit transmits light to the sensing area and receives reflected or interrupted light. The amplifier processes the light signal and converts it into an electrical signal, which is sent through the output wire. The three-wire configuration allows the sensor to operate reliably in environments with electrical noise, vibration, or high voltage, as the fiber itself is immune to electromagnetic interference and does not conduct electricity .
Practical Notes
- Installation: The three wires are typically color-coded (e.g., brown for V+, blue for GND, black for OUT) to simplify wiring.
- Output Types: Ensure compatibility with your control system; NPN outputs pull the signal to ground, while PNP outputs supply voltage to the load.
- Applications: These sensors are widely used for object detection in narrow spaces, liquid level sensing, and non-contact detection of various materials including glass, plastic, and metal . Understanding the three-wire configuration is essential for proper installation, signal interpretation, and integration of fiber optic sensors into automated systems.
