Article Overview
A 288 core fiber optic cable is a high-capacity cable designed for large-scale data transmission, featuring multiple loose tubes or ribbonized fibres, suitable for indoor, outdoor, and data center applications.
Cable Structure and Types
A typical 288 core fiber optic cable can be constructed in two main ways:
- Multi Loose Tube Armoured Cable: Fibres are grouped into 24 loose tubes, each containing fibre jelly for protection. These tubes are stranded around a central strength member (CSM) and wrapped with water-blocking glass yarn and corrugated steel tape (CST) for mechanical protection. The outer sheath can be made of PE, LSZH, or flame-retardant materials, making it suitable for duct, direct burial, or backbone communication cabling .
- Ribbonized Indoor Cable: Fibres are organized into ribbons, typically 12 fibres per ribbon, for easy mass fusion splicing and MPO-style connector termination. Each ribbon is housed in a sub-unit tube for better handling and management. These cables are often LSZH-rated and flame-retardant, ideal for high-density data center distribution .
Fibre Type and Performance
- Singlemode OS2 Fibres: Most 288 core cables use G.652.D compliant low water peak singlemode fibres, offering OS2 performance and backward compatibility with OS1. Some cables also support G.657.A1 for bend-insensitive applications .
- High-Density Applications: Ribbonized cables are optimized for mass fusion splicing, reducing installation time and space requirements in data centers .
Applications
- Telecommunication Backbone: High-capacity long-distance transmission in outdoor environments.
- Data Centers: High-density indoor distribution, supporting FTTH networks and large-scale server interconnections.
- Industrial and Harsh Environments: Armoured cables provide rodent resistance, mechanical protection, and durability for direct burial or exposed installations .
Key Features
- Mechanical Protection: Corrugated steel tape armouring or all-dielectric designs for indoor/outdoor versatility.
- Flame Retardancy: LSZH or flame-rated sheaths for safety in indoor installations.
- Ease of Installation: Lightweight, compact, and designed for quick deployment with clear jacket markings .
- Customizable Options: Sheath materials, jacket color, and fibre type can be tailored to project requirements . A 288 core fiber optic cable is ideal for projects requiring high bandwidth, reliability, and long-term scalability, making it a standard choice for modern telecommunication networks and data center infrastructures.
