Single-Mode Fiber (SMF)
Single-mode fiber has a small core diameter of about 8–10 microns, allowing only a single light mode to propagate. Single-mode fibers are commonly used in telecommunications, long-haul networks, and large data centers. Multimode Fiber (MMF)
Multimode fiber has a larger core diameter, usually 50 or 62.5 microns, which allows multiple light modes to travel simultaneously. This makes multimode fiber suitable for shorter distances, such as local area networks (LANs) and intra-data-center links, where cost efficiency is important. Due to modal dispersion, multimode fibers have a shorter maximum transmission distance compared to single-mode fibers. They are compatible with LED or VCSEL light sources and are color-coded as orange, aqua, or lime green, depending on the OM (Optical Multimode) grade, such as OM1, OM3, OM4, or OM5 . Multimode fibers are ideal for high-capacity, short-range communication.
