Article Overview
An optical module consists of a housing, optoelectronic assemblies (TOSA and ROSA), PCBA, connectors, and supporting components for signal conversion and transmission.
External Structure
The external components of an optical module include the housing, connector, dust cap, boot, and label. The housing protects internal components and is typically available in 1×9 or SFP form factors. The connector interfaces with the circuit board, providing both signal transmission and power. The dust cap shields the optical interface from contamination, while the boot ensures secure connections in SFP modules. Labels indicate key parameters and manufacturer information .
Internal Structure
Inside the module, the core components are:
- TOSA (Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly)
- Converts electrical signals into optical signals.
- Contains a laser diode (LD) or LED, monitoring photodiode, LD driver circuits, thermistors, thermoelectric coolers, and automatic power/temperature control circuits.
- LDs are preferred for high-speed, long-distance transmission due to high output and coupling efficiency, while LEDs are used for low-speed, short-distance links .
- ROSA (Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly)
- Converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals.
- Includes a photodiode (PIN or APD), pre-amplifier, and sometimes a booster circuit for high-sensitivity applications .
- PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly)
- Hosts the laser driver, limiting amplifier, and central controller.
- Manages signal processing, data rate support, and module control functions .
- Gold Finger Connector Pins
- Designed with varying lengths to ensure proper power-up sequence: ground pins first, then power, followed by data signals.
- Prevents electrical damage and signal interference during insertion/removal .
Light Source Types
- VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser): Efficient for short-range, high-speed applications.
- FP (Fabry-Pérot) Laser: Resonant cavity structure, suitable for moderate distances.
- DFB (Distributed Feedback) Laser: Single longitudinal mode, narrow linewidth, ideal for long-distance, high-speed transmission .
Functional Overview
Electrical signals enter the module via the connector, are processed by the driver circuits, and converted to optical signals by the TOSA. The optical signals travel through fiber to the receiving module, where the ROSA converts them back to electrical signals for output. Temperature and power control circuits maintain stable operation, ensuring signal integrity and module longevity . This structure ensures efficient, high-speed optical communication, with modularity allowing for various form factors and data rates from 100 Mbps to 400 Gbps and beyond .
