2. Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL)
- Description: Devices are connected in a loop, either physically or logically, sharing a single communication path.
- Characteristics: Devices arbitrate for access to the loop, allowing multiple nodes to communicate sequentially. It is cost-effective but has lower bandwidth per device compared to P2P .
- Use Case: Suitable for medium-sized SANs where cost is a concern.
3. Switched Fabric (FC-SW)
- Description: Devices connect through Fibre Channel switches forming a fabric, where each switch operates as part of a unified network.
- Characteristics: Provides high scalability, redundancy, and full bandwidth to each device. Supports large enterprise SANs with thousands of nodes .
- Use Case: Enterprise data centers requiring high availability, low latency, and deterministic performance.
Port Types and Roles
- N_Port (Node Port): Connects a device to the fabric or another node.
- F_Port (Fabric Port): Connects an N_Port to a switch.
- E_Port (Expansion Port): Connects switches to expand the fabric.
- L_Port (Loop Port): Connects a device to an arbitrated loop .
