Article Overview

Fiber optic sensors can measure speed by detecting changes in light signals caused by moving objects, enabling precise, non-contact tachometric measurements.

Principles of Fiber Optic Speed Measurement

Fiber optic sensors operate by transmitting light through optical fibers and detecting changes in the light caused by external stimuli, such as motion. For speed measurement, the sensor typically monitors reflected light from a moving surface or markings. Variations in light intensity, phase, or wavelength are converted into electrical signals, which are then processed to determine the velocity of the object .

Types of Fiber Optic Speed Sensors

  1. Proximity-Based Fiber Optic Sensors: These sensors detect the presence of reflective markings or features on a moving object. Each time a marking passes the sensor, a pulse is generated. By measuring the time interval between pulses, the speed can be calculated .
  2. Tachometric Fiber Optic Sensors: Designed for high-speed applications, these sensors can operate with bandwidths up to 100 kHz and provide TTL output signals suitable for digital processing .
  3. Laser-Enhanced Fiber Optic Sensors: Some systems integrate a laser source with the fiber optic probe to detect motion over longer distances (up to 300 mm) on reflective surfaces, maintaining high accuracy without direct contact .

Setup and Measurement Process

  1. Sensor Placement: Position the fiber optic probe close to the moving object, typically within 1–20 mm for standard setups, or use lenses for longer distances .
  2. Marking or Feature Detection: Apply reflective markings or use naturally reflective surfaces on the moving object. Each detected feature generates a light pulse.
  3. Signal Processing: The sensor converts light variations into electrical pulses. A counter or microcontroller measures the time between pulses to calculate speed using the formula: Speed=Distance between markingsTime interval
  4. Calibration: Ensure the sensor is calibrated for the specific surface reflectivity and distance to maintain accuracy.

Advantages

  • Non-Contact Measurement: Reduces wear and mechanical interference.
  • High Precision and Speed: Capable of detecting rapid motion with minimal latency .
  • Immunity to Electromagnetic Interference: Ideal for industrial environments with high electrical noise .
  • Flexible Deployment: Can measure speed over short or long distances depending on probe and lens configuration . Fiber optic speed sensors are widely used in industrial automation, conveyor systems, and rotating machinery monitoring, providing reliable, high-speed, and precise measurements without physical contact .
