Article Overview
Transmission line relay protection includes distance, differential, directional overcurrent, pilot, and backup schemes, each designed to detect faults and isolate the affected line section efficiently.
1. Distance Protection
Distance protection, also known as impedance protection, measures the line impedance to detect faults. It is divided into three zones for selective tripping:
- Zone 1: Covers 80% of the line and provides instantaneous tripping for faults within the primary section.
- Zone 2: Extends to 120% of the line, providing delayed tripping for faults beyond the line or in adjacent sections.
- Zone 3: Covers the full line length and part of the next line, offering backup delayed tripping if faults persist after Zone 2 operation. Carrier-aided schemes, such as permissive underreach, permissive overreach, and carrier blocking, enhance speed and selectivity for faults near zone boundaries .
2. Differential Protection
Differential protection compares currents at both ends of a transmission line. If the difference exceeds a set threshold, the relay identifies a fault and trips the breakers. This method is highly selective and fast, but it usually requires reliable communication between line ends .
3. Directional Overcurrent Protection
Directional overcurrent relays detect overcurrent in a specific direction. They are often used as backup protection for distance or differential schemes, providing a simpler and cost-effective solution for fault detection when communication channels are unavailable .
4. Pilot Protection
Pilot protection uses communication channels to coordinate tripping between line ends. It improves speed and selectivity for faults along the line. Common pilot schemes include current differential, permissive underreach, and permissive overreach .
5. Backup Protection
Backup protection ensures that if the primary relay fails, the next closest relay trips to isolate the fault. This includes time-graded overcurrent relays and inverse time relays, which operate faster for severe faults and slower for minor disturbances, maintaining system stability .
6. Special Features
- SOTF (Switch-On-to-Fault): Trips the line instantaneously if energized onto a permanent fault.
- Fuse Failure Protection: Blocks tripping and signals an alarm if a PT fuse fails.
- Power Swing Detection: Provides alarms or trips if power swings persist beyond a set time, preventing misoperation during system instability .
Summary
Transmission line protection is a coordinated system of relays, breakers, and communication channels designed to detect faults quickly, isolate only the affected section, and maintain system stability. The choice of protection scheme depends on line length, voltage level, communication availability, and the need for speed, selectivity, and backup reliability .
